The way we get rid of this problem is remove all the snow on the roof and ice on the bottom edge to create drainage. removing the snow will prevent the problem from coming back. after a snow storm all the snow should be removed off your roof soon as possible so the ice dam doesn't have a chance to start. Some signs of your ice daming problem can be poor ventilation, Not air tight attic space and heavy snow with weather changing. You can buy heated cables that melt the ice on the bottom edge and this will help the problem a lot. the top quality products have a thermostate so you save power. ice and water shield isn't 100% because it still can leak down the nail holes. (ice and water doesn't create a gasket around the nail like some people claim it does). ice and water is just a backup to protect the wood and keep the water to a mininum.
